Dump Truck Project - 2017

Each year the Touchmark retirement community in Bend does a Christmas project for 40 children, providing them with a toy. This year they are looking for help to build dump trucks for the boys. We might add that the children they service either have no parents or are mostly without their parents.

Everything is here in terms of drawings and instructions to allow an individual to construct and assemble a dump truck. Touchmark would like to receive these trucks by the end of October.

There are two files and several pictures to make the construction of the dump truck easier.

1. dump_truck_magazine_article.pdf is the magazine article first published in 1995 in Wood magazine. It has the cut lists, dimensioned drawings, construction and assembly directions.

2. dump_truck_patterns.pdf is the patterns that were included with the magazine. They were full size in the magazine. For your use I would scale and print them until your measurements correspond to the dimensions in the the patterns.

3. I thought the pictures to be too small, so I created a Sketchup 2016 model and from that pictures of each piece. They are larger and have all dimensions necessary to make the parts with the exception of the fender. Here I refer you to the pattern.

a. truck.png – an isometric view of the truck. No dimensions, just a picture to help visualize the completed truck.

b. exploded_view.png – an exploded view of the truck. No dimensions, a picture to help visualize the assembly process.

c. several pictures starting with box_ - dimensioned drawings of all truck box parts.

d. several pictures starting with cab_ - dimensioned drawings of the cab parts.

e. pictures that are dimensioned drawings of the remaining truck parts.

4. I did not include pictures of the purchased parts. These will be the axle pins, wheels, and some plugs.

5. I will include a cut list when I return from vacation with the parts segregated by thickness. This will help to make best use of the wood.

6. I will purchase all of the wood and hardware, and will resaw and plane the wood to the different thicknesses. From there I will make up packages of wood from which you can cut out the parts, and will include necessary hardware with the exception of screws.

7. I would work on the hardest parts first, the most complex of which are the fenders. After that there are some parts that require radii on the corners and edges – should be simple to make.
